The Small Grains Initiative (SGI) is made possible by special funding from the Minnesota Legislature, providing approximately $1.5 million annually to fund research to help Minnesota's wheat and barley industry. The funding followed the severe 1993 Fusarium Head Blight (FHB, scab) epidemic that by 1997 had caused an estimated $2 billion in losses in Minnesota. The SGI provides a means for the U of M to support significant, comprehensive projects to support and sustain Minnesota's wheat and barley industry.
